Atovaquone and Proguanil tablets UK
What is Malarone?
Malarone is a medicine that helps prevent malaria. It contains two active ingredients: atovaquone (250mg) and proguanil (100mg). It's mainly used by travellers going to areas where malaria is common.

How does Malarone work?
It works by killing the malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) and stopping it from multiplying, which lowers your chance of getting infected.

Is there a generic version of Malarone?
Yes. There’s a generic version that has the same ingredients as the branded one (atovaquone and proguanil) and works just as well.

What’s the difference between branded and generic Malarone?
They both do the same job and contain the same active ingredients. The only real differences are in the name, packaging, and price—the generic version is usually cheaper.
What is the dosage of Malarone?
Take one tablet every day.

Start 1 to 2 days before you enter a malaria-risk area

Continue every day while you're there

Keep taking it for 7 days after you leave

How many tablets will I need?
Add 9 to the number of days you’ll be in the malaria area.
(That covers 2 days before, your travel days, and 7 days after)

What if I miss a dose?
Take the missed tablet as soon as you remember.
If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one—don’t take two at once.

When should I start taking it?
Start 1 to 2 days before your trip to give the medicine time to build up in your system.
How effective is Malarone?
Malarone is highly effective at preventing malaria, but no medicine gives 100% protection. It’s still important to use insect repellent, nets, and cover up to avoid mosquito bites.

Does Malarone affect the contraceptive pill?
No, Malarone does not affect how well the contraceptive pill works.
What are the common side effects of Malarone?
Some people may get stomach upset, headache, or mild tummy discomfort.
If side effects get worse or bother you, speak to a doctor.

Is Malarone safe in pregnancy?
Malarone is not usually recommended if you're pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Talk to your doctor about safer options.

Who should not take Malarone?
Avoid Malarone if you:

Have serious liver or kidney problems

Are allergic to atovaquone or proguanil

What if I get side effects?
If you feel unwell or have strong side effects, stop taking Malarone and get medical help straight away.
What medicines can interact with Malarone?
Some medicines, like rifampicin (used for infections), can make Malarone less effective.

Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines or supplements you’re taking before starting Malarone.
How should I store Malarone?
Keep Malarone in its original packaging, at room temperature (between 15–30°C).
Store it away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
Before taking any medicine, always read the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with it.
